5A: Identifying Local Opportunities
Infant mortality
remains stubborn problem in Duval
Description: According to this article,
counties in Jacksonville, specifically Duval, Clay, Baker, Nassau and St.
John’s are having issues with reducing rates of infant mortality. The numbers
are terrifying since the article states: “Each year, enough infants die in Northeast Florida to fill eight
kindergarten classes.” Organizations have been founded to help reduce this
problem such as the Healthy Start program and they have helped reduce deaths,
however the numbers still rise. Others say the issue may derive from the opioid
epidemic because more than 700 babies were born with Neonatal Abstinence
Syndrome, and/or harmful sleep practices such as sleeping with teddy bears.
Description of the problem: Infant Mortality is increasing or remain at staggering heights
Description of who has the problem: Northeast
Florida department of Health; opioid addicted mothers; black mothers
Jacksonville is a
deadly city for bicyclists
Description: Jacksonville is one of the largest cities in Florida, with
advanced technology and wide roads, however, it is also known as one of the
deadliest place to be if you’re a bicyclist. Because of the large amount of car
accidents involving injuries, a Bicycle and Pedestrian plan is currently being
drafted. The Northeast Florida transportation Planning Organization is
expecting $9 billion in new roadway construction the next 20 years. To fix this
problem, the city is coming up with ways to help this crisis by implanting
different sets of priorities such as wider sidewalks and buffers between
sidewalks and cars.
Description of the problem: There are very
slim to none lanes for bicyclists and pedestrians. Because of this, it makes it
more likely for a pedestrian to die.
Description of who has the problem: These
bicyclists have the problem because they endanger themselves often

Bridge in Palm Valley shut due to hurricane damage
Description of the situation: Although
Hurricane Irma left Florida over a week ago, she left her imprints behind all
over Florida. Specifically, in Jacksonville, one of the major bridges in this
city has been forced to shut down. The reason behind shutting down the bridge
is because of the significant erosion due to flooding and Irma’s fierce winds.
Description of the problem: Because of the
Bridge closing down, a main route transportation, has caused traffic jams and
backups in an already busy city. This now leads to a need for other highways,
and or bridges.
Description of who has the problem: The construction
workers who have to work overtime or the lack thereof, the county officials,
the residents who have to make detours and constantly backed up in traffic.

Description of the situation: At the
Jacksonville Naval Hospital, a few employees have been removed from their post
because of posting inappropriate pictures online. A few of the pictures were of
a middle figure pointed at a newborn, a baby dancing to a rap and song and
more. The Hospital has responded that they have removed the employees and are
handling the situation as they speak.
Description of the problem: Nurses were abusing their power and
exploiting newborns and they’re parents.
Description of who has the problem: The
Hospital, the parents of the newborns, and the newborns who may have been
traumatized.
Some hurricane victims say FEMA hotel space hard to find
Description of the situation: Since Hurricane
Irma, many families have been displaced and are being rejected at FEMA inns. The
reason for this is that the hotels are either at max capacity or just have
other visitors currently residing in the rooms. Because there is no available
rooms v, hotels are dropping form FEMA’s evacuee hotel list. Many people have
lost their belongings to flooding and have nowhere else to go which has led
people to pay out of pocket and stay in non- FEMA evacuee hotels. Although they
must pay out pocket, the government should reimburse them but it may not be immediate.
Description of the problem: Not enough hotels;
the system that FEMA is using has glitches because of this many new hotels that
have joined the FEMA evacuee list are not showing up so families aren’t aware
to go there.
Description of who has the problem: FEMA,
Jacksonville residents, The state government, hotel workers, Hotel Owners
Hi Beau,
ReplyDeleteAll of your articles were very interesting to read. I have a soft spot for children, so it was so hard to read the articles about them. I knew there were mothers suffering from addiction who were with child, but I never read an article that discussed the statistics of the situation. Furthermore, I just recently had a bad experience under the care of nurses while in the hospital, it was terrible. I know not all nurses are bad, but the bad ones jeopardize the hospitals’ reputation; it’s a good thing that Jacksonville Naval Hospital handled the situation instead of ignoring it.
Hello Beau!
ReplyDeleteI felt that I was able to relate more closely to your articles because many of them had to do with hurricane Irma, and since we are in Florida, we know just how bad the situation was for some people. I know that for my family, the power was out for a few days, so I cannot imagine how awful it must be for certain people who are in a worse situation. As for the other articles, I found them to be interesting, as some of the information was unexpected, especially that of infant mortality rates.
Hi Beau,
ReplyDeleteYou definitely coved a lot of serious issues in the articles you chose to display local issues with. The article that you chose about bicycle safety really stood out to me because one of my best friends got in a bicycle accident and they are relatively common on UF campus. I feel like the infrastructure on campus could be more suited towards bicyclists and their safety. Good for you for looking into this and other important issues. There is clearly opportunities for you to improve these issues based on what you wrote about.
